Aachen Aix-la-Chapelle

Last October, Philip and I took the road to spend the day in Aachen in Germany.
Aachen is known through Charlemagne because it was the capital of his empire. I dreamed to go there since the age of 8, everyone has their own dreams! I am a sort of history nerd, I have always been and when I was 8 years old I was fascinated by Charlemagne, to visit the cathedral where he was crowned emperor was a childhood dream. So much for the story;)

Among the things to do in Aachen, there is obviously the cathedral, a pure gem! From the outside there is nothing special but the inside is just beautiful, the ceiling is covered with mosaic of antique and Byzantine inspiration. The mosaic is mainly gold, it shines in all directions.
A few steps from the cathedral you can visit the treasure. It was interesting but not transcendent like the cathedral. There were many relics, including those of Charlemagne. I suggest getting the audio guide to visit the treasure because there is no real explanation alongside the exhibits.

The city center is very nice, with very cute buildings. The city is animated, there are a lot of restaurant, bar and shops, the day we were there the weather was very beautiful and café terraces were full.
If there is something to bring back from Aachen it's the printen. It is a specialty from Aachen, a soft cookie shaped gingerbread. There are quite a few shops that sell them in the city and printen comes in various forms. We bought some coated with almonds chocolate milk and dark chocolate, it was very very good.

Aachen is a beautiful and pleasant city. For lack of time we have not been able to enjoy the hot springs, if we had stayed two days we would have done a dip in thermal water.
